Figure Carla Maria Cadotte on Muscle Beach TV Interview with Figure Competitor Carla Maria A. Cadotte
on June 3rd, 2011
Could you tell us a bit about yourself and how you started training?
I had always been an athlete as a child, competing primarily in swimming, track, and cross-country. Throughout high school I participated in Varsity Sports and was introduced to weight training as a part of our track and field training regiment, since then I have been in love with weight training!
How do you stay motivated?
I am always looking for ways to continue challenging myself as both an individual and an athlete. Therefore, my motivation is a continuous desire to evolve as an individual in all aspects of life whether it is physically, mentally, or spiritually. In addition, the Figure athletes and bodybuilders that I admire the most provide motivation for me to work towards improving my physique
What is your current workout routine?
Currently I am preparing for a few competitions, so I do split routines for various muscle groups depending on the day. Generally I follow a split where each day is assigned one or two body parts:
Monday: Chest
Tuesday: Legs
Wednesday: Biceps & Triceps
Thursday: Off
Friday: Shoulders & Calves
Saturday: Back
Sunday: Off
In addition, I do cardio 5-7 days a week for anywhere from 35minutes to an hour a day depending on how close I am to competition. I also work abs 2-3 days a week at most though the exercises I do for abs are very limited.
What is your diet like?
My diet varies depending on where I am in regards to my contest prep or if I am in between shows. However, regardless of whether I am training for a show or in the off-season, I avoid simple sugars and stick to a diet high in lean protein, a good balance of healthy fats, plenty of fresh vegetables, and whole grains or low glycemic carbohydrates. In addition, I drink about 1 to 1.5 gallons of water per day. Refined sugars, juices, sodas, and junk are not a part of my diet.
What gives you the best results when trying to get lean?
Everyone’s body is different in regards to what works best for them when trying to get lean. However, for myself, I find that my body responds best to increased cardio and a diet lower in carbohydrates and higher in lean protein when I need to lean out.
What 3 exercises have contributed the most to building your physique?
I think it is important for anyone to train their body in a way that builds muscle evenly throughout as to avoid injury and to ensure aesthetic symmetry, therefore I don’t feel there are any 3 exercises in particular that I feel have contributed the most to building my physique. However, I would probably have to say that squats, deadlifts, and pull-ups are amongst my favorite exercises.
What supplements do you use?
There are so many supplements that I use, particularly in preparing for a Figure competition. However, some of the staples in my supplement routine would be: multi-vitamin, whey protein isolate, glutamine, BCAA’s, Alpha Lipoic Acid, L-Carnitine, Vitamin C, B Complex, Cortisol complex, ZMA, Essential Fatty Acid blend, Probiotics.
What is the most common training question that people ask you?
The most common training question I receive from both men and women would have to be, “How do you get your abs to look like that?” I always tell people that I only work abs about 2 times per week and that I only do 2-3 exercises each time to work my abdominals, which they cannot seem to believe. I also inform them that the key to having visible abdominals is primarily attributed to diet and conditioning, and that no matter how much muscle you may have built up in your abs, you will never be able to have a “6-pack” unless you are able to get your bodyfat low enough to where they are no longer hidden.
What is your greatest achievement so far?
In regards to fitness I would have to say my greatest achievement so far is winning 1st place in my height class and the Figure Overall at my first Figure competition, the 2011 NPC GNC Muscle Contest in Culver City, CA.
What is your favorite quote?
“All that we are is a result of what we have thought.” - Buddha
What are your plans for the future?
I have many plans for the future and several projects I am working on. However, my current focus is preparing for the NPC Greater Gulf States competition that I will be competing at in New Orleans on June 25th, and training for the 2011 NPC USA’s at which I will be competing for my IFBB Figure Pro Card.
