Michael Kefalianos captured his Olympia qualification this year by taking third at the Australian Pro. At this same competition in 2010, he took fourth - a placing we would see him repeat through the 2010 contest season.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Michael has already competed twice since then at the British Grand Prix and FIBO, taking fifth in both.
Next up for this taxi driving IFBB Pro is the New York Pro.
Read on to see why Michael competes so often and what he thinks about making his Olympia debut later this year...
AZ: You've competed quite a bit lately, even after receiving your Olympia qualification. Why do you compete so much, rather than give your body a chance to rest before the Olympia prep begins?
MK: First of all let me begin by saying that over the years of training and competing, I have learned to listen to my body very well.
When I compete, I feel great. I am eager to show my best to the world, and that motivates me beyond anything else.
With that said, I took time off from August 2010 until I started my prep for the 2011 Australian Pro. For me that was plenty of time, and I was well-rested for the season.
I had already planned some shows in Europe, after my usual Australian debut. These do not require much travel for me at all, given that I live in Greece.
I really wanted to compete in Germany, because I love the German culture, and I have a lot of great fans there. I received a lot of help from friends in Germany on my quest to become a professional, and they still support me to this day. I owed it to them, and it turned out to be a great show.
Now, my next competition will be the New York Pro, the biggest show after the Olympia and the Arnold.
New York is a great place. I love the energy of the fans and it's a meeting place on the east coast for industry people from all over the country. MD will be there, and so will my sponsor, MHP Supplements. It's a great chance to meet with both.
After that, i will take a few weeks off and begin my contest prep for the Mr. Olympia.
AZ: You failed to qualify for the Olympia last year, although you came close a time or two. How frustrating was that?
MK: I gave my all in each show I did in 2010, and I received some excellent feedback from everyone.
Despite not qualifying, I was grateful for having the opportunity to compete among such great athletes and in such great shows.
The encouragement from the fans, and the advice I received from judges and officials, kept me motivated and mentally strong to keep bringing my best shape and conditioning.
AZ: You've already turned in your contract to compete at the Olympia this year. What do you think about the guys who qualify but don't compete? Would you ever do that?
MK: I think that everyone has the right to compete or not.
Maybe one athlete doesn't feel ready to compete at such a high level, and he wants to get even better for next year.
I personally feel that if I qualified every year, I would not miss the opportunity. No way!
If the opportunity presented itself, I would do everything in my power to be ready and better than ever!
AZ: Do you do your own prep? If not, who helps you?
MK: My trainer and coach has been David Balassas, for the past twelve years.
We train together, and I listen to him like a small child. I always learn something new from this great man I admire.
I, myself, am a soldier during the contest prep, and that's why we have such great results every time.
As far as nutrition is concerned, my wife Helen helps me with everything on a daily basis.
AZ: When people hear that you're a taxi driver, they always seem surprised. Why do you think that is? And do you enjoy your job?
MK: I have always worked hard in my life. I was never given anything.
I have learned to work hard, whatever the job.
Now, and for the past fourteen years, I have been a taxi driver in the beautiful island of Kos, Greece, so I can support my family with whatever they need.
No one really believes what kind of job I have, and they always laugh when I tell them.
Also, when I tell them that I have four kids from ages eighteen to ten, they are shocked!!
AZ: You always come in conditioned, yet you failed to make top three at any of the shows last year. Why do you think that is?
MK: I think for a first year of competing so much, I wasn't very well known.
I did six shows in a row, and every time I was better than the last.
I'm not the only one saying that. I was also told by some judges, and I am really grateful for their advice, which motivated me each and every time.
With each show, I became more determined and strong to keep pursuing my dream. I love the journey of success, and I wasn't upset at all by my placings.
I believe that this year is my strongest yet, and this is mainly due to the fact that I listened to what the judges told me and got to work.
AZ: What's your goal for the Olympia? Where do you see yourself placing?
MK: I think, with this year's improvements, and the work that will go into my prep until September, I will be at my all time best, with all my friends, trainer, and family by my side.
I don't like predictions, so you'll have to wait for the big day!
AZ: Anything else you would like to add?
MK: At this point, I would like to say a big thank you to my sponsor in Greece, Alex Siatravanis of Healthy2Day, my international sponsor, MHP Supplements, and my manager in the US, Kostas from
www.Bodybuilders.gr.A big thank you also to you for the opportunity of this interview, Mr Blechman for his support through the magazine, and also to all the guys who have helped with publishing my videos and photos, Robbie D, Butch, Ron Harris, and of course the great photographer Mr. Per Bernal!
