| 5 des favoris en lourds-légers pour Flex Online : http://www.flexonline.com/news/contests/5-watch-light-heavyweightsPETE CICCONENational Level History: 2010 USA, light-heavy, 2nd; 2009 USA, light-heavy, 5th; 2008 USA, light-heavy, 6th Our Take: After over 15 years of competing, San Diego’s Cicccone took a huge leap forward last year with his second in this class. If he can match last year’s condition but bring more upper body density, he’ll join training partner Derek Farnsworth in the big league. TAMER EL-GUINDY
National Level History: 2009 Nationals, light-heavy, 3rd; 2009 USA, light-heavy, 1st; 2008 USA, light-heavy, 4th; 2007 USA, middleweight, 2nd
Our Take: As befits his nickname, “Razor” always brings the cuts, but El-Guindy, who won this class two years ago, previously lacked enough fullness to earn a pro card. We’ll see if two years of growing allowed him to fill in his 5'8" frame. LORENZO JONES
National Level History: 2010 Nationals, light-heavy, 4th; 2009 Nationals, light-heavy, 6th; 2008 Nationals, middleweight, 4th
Our Take: After six Nationals dating back to 2002, two North Americans (he won the middleweight class in ‘04), and his overall victory at last year’s Junior USA, this is Jones’ first stab at the USA. Expect the 44-year-old Texan to be in the mix again. LENYN NUNEZ
National Level History: none
Our Take: At this May’s California Championships, New Yorker Nunez (now living in Los Angeles) carried home the light-heavy and overall trophies. Amazingly, it was his first open contest, and his only other show was as a teen. Can the 29-year-old have a similarly shocking impact at the USA? KYLE WITHERSPOON
National Level History: 2010 USA, light-heavy, 7th
Our Take: Sporting one of the most symmetrical physiques in the class, this Arizonan made his mark with a seventh here last year. Now the 5'6", 33-year-old is looking to move into title contention. |

| 5 des favoris en Figures & bikini pour Flex Online : NPC USA Championships Preview: Figure & BikiniFIGURE 1. Alicia Rankovic: She placed second at the 2010 NPC USA and third at the 2010 NPC Nationals. The only way she can make 2011 a better year is with a win and a pro-card. 2. Irina Kiselev: She improved on a fourth place finish at last year’s USA with a class win at the 2011 Arnold Amateur. Now she returns to Vegas looking to make it two wins in a row. 3. Michelle Beck: Going back to 2010, Michelle has placed third in three National-level contests, including this year’s Team Universe. In Vegas, she’ll have to move to first if she wants to leave an IFBB Pro. 4. Kalani Barber: She’s placed in the Top-5 at four National-level contests in the past three years. Her best showing to date was at last year’s NPC USA and she’ll look for a new best this time around. 5. Sahsa Brown: She won the 2011 NPC Southern Cal and then grabbed fourth at the NPC Team Universe. Sasha is hoping a return to the west coast will mean a return to first. BIKINI 1. Alex Zerega: This familiar face won the 2010 FLEX Bikini Model Search and has since graced the pages of FLEX and M&F Hers. Alex most recently placed fourth at the 2011 NPC Jr. Nationals. 2. Whitney Wiser: She’s had as a good of a season as possible without turning pro; Whitney’s already won her class at both the 2011 NPC Jr. USA and NPC Jr. Nationals. If she can win in Vegas, a pro card is guaranteed! 3. Lee Ann Silva: She came close to winning a pro card at the NPC Team Universe with a third place finish. A few weeks of work in between shows might be just what she needs to leap into first. 4. Michelle Tarjcak: She started off the year with a win a the FLEX Pro Bikini Model Search and went on to win the overall at the NPC West Coast Classic. Now Michelle looks to take her winning ways to the national level. 5. Courtney Prather: She placed a very close second at the FLEX Pro Bikini Model search and went on to place fifth at the NPC Jr. Nationals. Courtney will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing showing at the NPC Team Universe earlier this month. WHAT: 2011 NPC USA Championships WHERE: Artemus W. | 5 TO WATCH: HEAVYWEIGHTS! Champagnie, De La Rosa, Jordan, Nguyen, & Croon stand out in a true battle of heavyweights!
This USA class has traditionally been a bit of an enigma. Since the creation of the super-heavyweight class in 1998, only three heavyweights have won the USA overall, the first of whom was Phil Heath in 2005. That said, two of the last three USA overall winners have been heavies (Brandon Curry in 2008, Mark Alvisi in 2009), so this class has been on a role of late. Will that heavyweight strength continue this year?
ANTHONIEL CHAMPAGNIE National Level History: 2010 Nationals, heavyweight, 3rd; 2009 Nationals, heavyweight, 5th; 2008 Nationals, heavyweight, 4th Our Take: Making his USA debut, New York’s Champagnie has a pleasing combo of size and shape. If he’s filled in his back and hams, he can move up from his third at last year’s Nats.
ZIN CROON National Level History: 2010 USA, heavyweight, 4th; 2009 Nationals, heavyweight, 6th; 2009 USA, heavyweight, 5th Our Take: Croon has been consistent: in the mix to pose on Saturday (i.e. top five), but not a strong threat for a pro card. He just needs to display a little more size (especially in his chest) and little sharper condition than last year to take that next step and be in the fight for first this year.
JONATHAN DE LA ROSA National Level History: 2010 USA, heavyweight, 2nd; 2009 Jr. Nationals, light-heavy and overall, 1st Our Take: This New Yorker burst onto the scene with his Atlantic States and Jr. Nationals overall victories in 2009, and he very nearly nabbed a pro card on his first try at last year’s USA. If he can come in near the top of the heavy’s 225-limit and a bit tighter than last year, De La Rosa will be tough to beat.
KEVIN JORDAN National Level History: 2011 Jr. Nationals heavyweight and overall, 1st; 2010 Nationals, heavyweight, 10th Our Take: Because we liked his great lines and full muscle bellies, we made Jordan one of our “4 To Watch” despite his double-digit finish in last year’s Nats. This year, he proved us prophetic by winning the overall at the Jr. Nationals. Need we remind you of another Jr. Nats champ who then leapt into the same year’s USA as a heavyweight? Hint: his nickname is “The Gift.”
AN NGUYEN National Level History: 2010 USA Championships, light-heavy, 4th Our Take: Northern California’s Nguyen opened a lot of eyes with his light-heavy fourth in last year’s contest. A bit leaner, and he may well have won the class. This year he made two moves: down to Southern California (training at the Mecca) and up to the heavies. We’ll see if both moves pay off.

| 3 TO WATCH: SUPER-HEAVYWEIGHTS! Williams, Morel, & Kuclo go head-to-head and something's got to give! On paper, the super-heavyweight battle looks to be the most intriguing NPC skirmish in a decade. There will be at least five guys to watch, but because this looks like a three-man race for the title, that's where we're focused. We have the perennial “bride’s maid,” Keith Williams, coming off a monumentally frustrating year in which he was second in three pro-qualifiers. We have super newbie, Juan Morel, who was second in two pro-qualifiers last year, but as a heavyweight. And we have the (still) young gun, Steve Kuclo, who seems to have all the tools--but needs to finally sharpen them. Collectively, they racked up five seconds and a third in pro-qualifiers last year. Something’s got to give. KEITH WILLIAMSNational Level History: 2010 Nationals, super-heavyweight, 2nd; 2010 North American, 2nd; 2010 USA, super-heavyweight, 2nd Our Take: The 5'10" Williams doesn’t have the ideal shape, but he’s getting the most of it. After his runnerup trifecta last year, has he filled out his weaker areas (quad sweep, lower lats) enough to get over the hump this year? JUAN MORELNational Level History: 2010 Nationals, heavyweight, 2nd; 2010 North American, heavyweight, 2nd Our Take: New York’s Morel displayed a balanced attack last year as a heavyweight, but at 5'11" he was simply too tall for a class that limited his weight at 225. We noted then that his best fit would be with the unlimited class, and he’s moving on up this year. If he simply brings a bigger version of his 2010 form, he’ll be fighting for a top spot again, perhaps in the overall posedown. STEVE KUCLONational Level History: 2010 Nationals, super-heavyweight, 3rd; 2010 USA, super-heavyweight, 6th; 2008 Nationals, super-heavyweight, 3rd Our Take: When a 5'11" guy competes at over 260, he doesn’t lack muscle. Unfortunately, for Kuclo, he’s repeatedly lacked cuts. He has the fullness, even in areas like calves that other guys don’t, but, throughout his career going back to the Teen Nationals (where he won the heavyweight class twice) he just hasn’t come in dry enough to nab an overall title or a pro-qualifier class win. Still, he’s only 25. Will this be the show Kuclo pulls it all together and fulfills his immense promise? |
